Mary painted the private and public lives of women of the second half of the 19th century. Although she never made a clear political statement about women rights in her works -she reserved that matter for her “real” life-, her paintings represent women reading, playing cards, writing, nursing, and a vast amount of situations, always evoking a kind of complexity and intellingence that depicted the new woman of the era.
Not to tell that she was actually one.
